The Recycling Market Development staff at the South Carolina Department of Commerce provides business matchmaking support, administers one-on-one materials management consultation, works with existing and emerging markets for materials, and tracks the economic impact of the recycling industry. Recycling is a green growth industry in South Carolina, home to over 500 recycling companies including collectors, processors, recycled product manufacturers and equipment makers. The economic impact of recycling now exceeds $13 billion. In the last 5 years, Commerce helped facilitate the recycling industry recruitment of 2477 jobs, $1,129 million in capital investment, and 42 new or existing companies investing in South Carolina.

Your Bottle Means Jobs is an initiative of the Carolinas Plastics Recycling Council (CPRC), a joint effort in NC/SC to increase plastic bottle recycling. The CPRC launched the Your Bottle Means Jobs campaign to get more of the six billion plastic bottles discarded each year in the Carolinas back into the production cycle. More than 60 companies process and manufacture recycled bottle plastics to go back into bottles, strapping, film, fiber and new consumer products, employing over 3,500 people in both states. The campaign’s call to action is “If every household in the Carolinas recycled just two more bottles a week, we could create an additional 300 jobs!”
